With the potato harvest virtually complete, I thought a resume of the season to date might be of interest.

What a contrast to 2010/11. Prices have been low, perhaps £100 per tonne less than last year, supply of good quality has been plentiful and demand awful. In consequence, confidence is at a very low ebb. The picture is the same in Europe where, without the shortages in Eastern Europe and Russia, prices have fallen as low as 30 euros per tonne.

There is a little light at the end of the tunnel as various quality issues manifest themselves in store and prices inch up as off-the-field finishes.

We are about to announce the signing of a major, long term contract with one of our customers which may be the largest one ever signed in the UK. It is a commitment by both parties to a partnership which will develop over time to the benefit of the UK customer, ourselves and our contract growers.

Finally, a thank you to the many people who have contacted the family enquiring about our father’s health after the serious stroke he suffered. He is recovering slowly, despite several minor setbacks, and we hope, eventually, he will make a satisfactory recovery. Certainly if determination were the main factor, he will be up and running very quickly.
